Maidstone were lucky to find a window in the stormy weather for their away clash with BromBecks. They might have stayed dry but they still had to weather a storm of attacks from the BromBecks young and fast side. The opposition were dominant throughout but the Maidstone defenders were particularly alert and reactive this week, and they needed to be because BromBecks were relentless and peppered the goal continuously. Young keeper Freya Brown was outstanding with her quick reactions and acrobatic saves time after time. Laura Rookard, Holly Sherwood, Michelle Smith and Kate Bowen provided a wall to frustrate BromBecks who just could not break through and it was a huge achievement to still be 0-0 at half time. Maidstone had managed a couple of breaks themselves but the game was all about defending this week.
In the second half, BromBecks continued to get frustrated as they hit the post, had Maidstone clear shots off the line and save penalty corners. With 10 minutes to go they eventually beat the exhausted Maidstone defence to claim the first goal. Unfortunately, an error at a hit out gave BromBecks their second shortly after and then their third just before the whistle. A quick break by Maidstone’s Tracy Murphy-Bellchambers gave Nicky Bourne a clean strike but she unfortunately hit the side board. Unsurprisingly, most Player of the Match votes went to the hard-working defenders, with goalkeeper Brown deservedly taking the honours. Maidstone remain just off the bottom in 9th place with 2 games to go.
