Short Corner Success

Ladies 3s were keen to maintain their unbeaten start to the season with the dreaded Knole Park fixture looming the following week. The team got off to a steady start. A reshuffled defence of Vicky, Caroline, Smithy, Lucinda and Jaime on the left were holding a firm line at the back allowing the midfield of Katie, Megs, Bea, Nikki and Hannah to gain possession and feed some good passes through to the forward line of Bethan, Julie and Ellie.
However, the hockey wasn't quite as flowing as previous weeks and Maidstone were suddenly given a wake up call when a Brombeck forward kicked the ball past Lucinda (after she'd made a great tackle) to drive down the wing and cross and take the a 1-0 lead. Thankfully the politeness of Smithy asking the umpire to check with the other umpire resulted in the kick being spotted and no goal and all round relief!.
This then motivated the team to be more pro active, winning a short corner which Smithy struck powerfully, deflected off a defender and past the keeper to give Maidstone the lead (Smithy maintains it was on target!)
Maidstone continued to drive forward as a team and soon won a second short, Smithy stopped, slipped left to Julie who's shot was parried by a defender into the path of Katie who made no mistake in smashing the ball into the bottom right corner, making that 2-0 at half time.
The second half saw BromBecks putting more pressure on Maidstone with their younger players starting to use their pace which made for a hard fought scrappy second half.
The Maidstone defence fought for every ball, the midfield ran tirelessly helping the defence and supporting the attack, Bethan was a great
position ally up front to act as an outlet and hold up play but with around 10 mins to go, BromBecks pulled a goal back making for a slightly nervy last few minutes but Maidstone held on for the 2-1 win. Not our finest performance but the team definitely made up for that in gritted determination to work hard and no to throw away a hard fought win.
