Disallowed goal leave Maidstone with a draw

Maidstone 1's travelled to Cambridge to take on a young and surprisingly well-drilled Cambridge University side in blustery conditions. The match started with Cambridge Uni on the upper foot, passing the ball well round the back to create chances on the attack. Maidstone held strong, making some strong tackles through the midfield to overturn possession. It was unfortunately the home side who broke the deadlock, with a short corner routine deflecting at the right post to find a way through the mass of players and into the backboard. Maidstone kept fighting, finding more of the ball as the half progressed with many more shots and short corners than the home side. Another steal of possession through the midfield, enabled Susie Rowe to connect with Lizzie McClintock square on the left who had a clear pass to Claire Weddle down the line. Weddle then fed in forward Emily Bush in the D, who picked the ball nicely in the air off the keeper, to loop in for a fantastic goal to bring the score level at half time.

Maidstone worked hard in the second half, holding on to the ball and making the Cambridge keeper work very hard to keep Maidstone from going ahead. The midfield line of Player of the Match McClintock, Catherine Broadbent, Lou Cassey, Emma Worsfold & Katie Swaffer worked tirelessly to create attacking opportunities for Maidstone, but the goal just wouldn't come. Cambridge had a few break away attempts but the majority were dealt with easily by the away defence line of Rowe, Hannah Durston & Helena Scott. Maidstone thought they had the match won when yet another short corner routine saw the ball rebound off the keeper to a waiting Lou Cassey, who powered the ball into the back of the net, but it wasn't to be and the umpires decided the ball was dangerous and the goal was disallowed. The match finished 1-1 so Maidstone look to keep improving and bring home all 3 points when travelling to Upminster next week.
