Maidstone were determined to continue their run of form as they welcomed Canterbury to Armstrong Road. A confident start from Maidstone saw some positive build up play to challenge Canterbury’s defensive line, whilst Maidstone’s back three also remained resolute in defence with well-timed tackles, interceptions and disciplined marking from Hannah Durston, Helena Scott and Grace Mansfield as both sides settled into the first half. Maidstone caused their opposition some issues as the side continued to press for a goal; some good attacking runs from Katie Gibbons, Lesley Price and Claire Weddle resulted in Maidstone taking an early lead from some strong linking play from Midfielders Catherine Broadbent and Lizzie McClintock, threading it through to Emily Bush on the post who slotted the ball in the goal. Coupled with strong individual and linking play from Louise Cassey and Laura Jackson, the home side forced the Canterbury defence and their keeper to make several clearances, and Maidstone’s Keeper, Becky Ward held the Canterbury attack at bay with some key saves. However, Canterbury continued to pressure and equalised as half time approached, taking advantage of a weakened Maidstone formation. Not long afterwards, Canterbury were awarded a short corner which was successfully converted, taking the lead just before the break.

Into the second half, both sides continued to push for a goal. Canterbury did not manage to penetrate the steadfast Maidstone midfield and defensive unit. An unwavering Maidstone side were persistent in their quest to equalise and the forwards and continued to cause Canterbury trouble in their defensive D, winning a number of penalty corners. A resilient Maidstone side continued to threaten and but all efforts went unrewarded throughout the second half. Maidstone prevented Canterbury from increasing their score line, but unable to convert, Canterbury held on to the lead and took the three points. Hannah Durston was this week’s worthy recipient of player of the Match. Focusing on the week ahead, Maidstone hope to put the disappointing loss behind them with a more positive performance against this weekend’s opposition, Ashford L1’s.
