Ladies 1s win away at Canterbury

Maidstone were determined to continue their run of form away from home as they travelled to Canterbury for their second away fixture of this year. A confident start from Maidstone saw some positive build up play to challenge Canterbury’s defensive line, whilst Maidstone’s back four also remained resolute in defence with well-timed tackles, interceptions and disciplined marking from Hannah Durston, Rachael Ferguson, Helena Scott and Grace Mansfield throughout the first half. Maidstone caused their opposition some issues as the side continued to press for a goal; some good attacking runs from Katie Gibbons, Emily Bush, Lesley Price and Claire Weddle resulted in Maidstone goals from Emily and Claire to see Maidstone take an early lead. Canterbury continued to chase and were awarded a short corner which was successfully converted. Coupled with strong individual and linking play from midfielders Catherine Broadbent, Louise Cassey, Lizzie McClintock and Laura Jackson forced the Canterbury defence and their keeper to make several clearances. Canterbury equalised just before half time taking advantage of a weakened formation, though Maidstone were quick to counteract and score two further goals, one through a superb reverse strike from Louise Cassey.

Into the second half, both sides continued to push for a goal. Canterbury did not manage to penetrate the steadfast Maidstone midfield and defensive unit. An unwavering Maidstone side were persistent in their quest to extend their lead, and the forwards continued to cause Canterbury trouble in their defensive D, winning a number of penalty corners. Intercepting in the midfield, Maidstone continued to stretch their lead through goals from Lizzie and Lesley. Katy Gibbons drove towards the D, shook off the Canterbury defence and hit the back board with a well-placed strike on the move. A resilient Maidstone side continued to threaten and were rewarded with another goal by Laura Jackson. A number of key saves from Becky Ward throughout the second half prevented Canterbury from increasing their score line. With the home side unable to close the gap, Maidstone held on to the lead and took the three points, with Louise Cassey a worthy recipient of Man of the Match. The strength and depth of the Maidstone squad puts them in good stead to see them rewarded with another win against their next opposition, Ashford L1's.
