The ladies 1s travelled into London for a game against Blackheath & Elthamians 1s this being the first league game post cup game or a week off which most of the Maidstone 1s players had. The team were in good spirits and sun was shining on a cold winter morning.
The game commenced and Maidstone flew into action, challenging Blackheath at every turn. Pressing well they secured a number of turnovers in middle of the pitch allowing Lizzie to start some early birthday celebrations through tearing up the blackheath defence.
A short corner awarded in the first half saw Gibbo use her quick reactions to take the ball from the keepers pads and slot in for the first goal.
Maidstone continued to enjoy applying the pressure and Lizzie scored from a further short corner to make it 2-0.
Re & Izzie commanded the Maidstone defence and held the scoreline strongly in Maidstones’ favour.
Blackheath did break through the usually solid Maidstone press and found the footing to score 2 goals in quick succession.. was this to be an omen for the rest of the game?
Never the less, having none of it, the Maidstone side responsed with force with Emma & Lizzie once again tearing through the middle, to find Giorgia on the post - scoring a beautiful first goal for the team from an incredibly obtuse angle.
Half time score was 3-2.
Its unclear what changed at half time, but Maidstone seemed to leave that golden spark in the dug out. A combination of lost heads and decisions made caused the team to collapse like a house of cards. Maidstone could not find the passes like the half prior and it seemed all lines separated supplying little to no support to the individual on the ball.
By giving Blackheath an inch, they rightfully took a mile. They spend much of the half in control putting 3 goals past the bewildered Maidstone side to make the final score 5-3. Disappointing? Correct.
However the girls now endeavour to draw a line over the game and move forward to this Saturday against Folkestone 2s at the mighty Maidstone home ground.
