MHC Ladies 1s VS Canterbury 3s

Rehannah Houghton-Judge8 Oct 2024 - 16:32

Two wins on the trot for the Ladies 1s!

The ladies 1s face Canterbury 3s at home last Saturday. The Canterbury side attacked fast, they positioned players in between the midfield and defence lines which MHC had to adapt to quickly.

Overall, for the first 10 minutes or so possession was mixed, MHC had more chances moving forward but initially the ladies could not find the backboard and it was evident that MHC were not moving the goal keeper.

Unfortunately and on a rather sad note, after a moment of lackadaisical defending and a transfer fail, the MHC back four was out of position and the Canterbury centre forward was able to intercept and beeline towards goal with all players tracking back behind her. She managed to hit the ball from outside the D finding the bottom corner of the goal and the umpires considered this as a legitimate goal. Some would think the goal was fair due to the poor play just before.

Nevertheless, the ladies motivated one another and the ball was able to swiftly move up the MHC attacking end. Kate Smoker dominated the mid region and brilliant distributed the ball to Katie Swaffer (Gibbo) who was located on the top of the D. Gibbo then dribbled towards the goal and moved around the rather static goal keeper and slotted the ball into the back of the goal. A equaliser goal for MHC.

MHC had a confidence boost, the girls now had more possession than the opposing team, brilliant passes were being made between lines and play was fluid going forward. However MHC seemingly continued to stuggled to execute the goal.

Never the less… Emma Worsfold, rather clinically and similar to the week prior, slotted the ball into the bottom left corner from a short corner. The girls played out the final 5 minutes of the first half slowing play down and keeping position.

MHC went into the second half 2-1 up, an unfamiliar position. Throughout the latter half, it was evident Canterbury were panicking often throwing sticks in for the majority of tackles and some questionable elbows in backs were felt. Surprisingly no cards, let alone warnings, were given to the opposing team. Thus a challenge was apparently for the girls to stay disciplined for the remainder of the game, which they suceeded at.

Similar to the first half, play was lovely going forward and to make the second goal of the game for Gibbo; Captain Steph Lurshay hit the ball from the twenty-five and found Gibbo who deflected the ball into the goal. 3-1!

Play continued, MHC counted down the minutes and kept a clean sheet all second half. The score was left 3-1 and therefore making it the second win for MHC so far this season!

Next week the ladies 1s face Ashford Away. A third win? We will have to wait and see.
