The Ladies 1s kicked off the new season in the South East Women’s Division 1 East at home facing Burnt Ash, a fellow team who fell from the above league.
Maidstone began strong, moving the ball around and largely dominating the first half. The defensive press worked wonders and saw off the opposition at multiple points; either with Burnt Ash shoving the ball off the side line or the ball getting intercepted across all regions of the pitch. A few short corners were won with Gabs placed at the top to show off her drag flick and a few other variations were thrown in. The girls were on top however no goals could be executed. 0-0 in the first half.
Going into the second half optimistic Maidstone switched back on. A mention must go to Megan who had her Ladies 1s debut - Megan played right back and distributed the ball well, she also found herself in a vital tackling position which again she executed brilliantly. Lizzie Ashford (previously known as Daniels) returned and her ability to dominate the midfield did not go unnoticed. Steph Lurshay also supported Diz in the mid regions.
Burnt Ash clearly began to panic and there were a few shoved from the opposition here and there. Maidstone will forever debate why no cards were given. Aerials from Rehannah H-J and Izzie Ramiro at centre backs led to the Burnt Ash press at points being next to useless thus Maidstone were able to turn and overload quickly.
Maidstone had chances and the ball mostly was in the Burnt Ash half. Gio Woods and Lesley Price were part of the mayhem missing a tap in on the post from Gio and Lesley hitting the cross bar from about two yards from the goal. Much like the first half, the girls were unable to place the ball in the goal.
Burnt Ash had around 10 minutes of being on top, here they utilised the pressure Maidstone was under and the opposition scored two goals in quick succession. Resulting in the score line of 2-0 to Burn Ash.
Maidstone reflected on the game, there were brilliant elements including the press and out-letting highlighted. As well as the attitude of the Ladies 1s, everyone worked out of their skin and efforts were not overlooked.
In training the girls be focusing on attacking transitions and they will endeavour to put the ball into the goal next weekend against Tunbridge Wells. Onwards and upwards!
