Burnt Ash 1-0 Maidstone

Tom Elstone

Maidstone's woes away from home continue despite an improved performance.

Burnt Ash's lack of amenities make it a rather uninspiring away venture but the Stones squad still travelled with fervour and intent to right the wrongs of their previous away fixture which was their most disappointing result and performance of the year.

To write-up in detail of the game proves a difficult task given the even-nature of both sides and the fact that neither side had particularly significant chances throughout the full seventy minutes.

The first half, on balance, saw Burnt Ash the better of the two sides. They managed to win four corners from their attacking endeavours. Of which they scored the only goal of the fixture just before half time. Wheeler requested more of the same patience of his side during the half-time break, trusting that MHC would find a few openings that could prove the difference.

MHC transferred the ball willingly throughout the first and continued to do so through the second. However, chances from open-play came at a premium. The best Stones chance of the game came as a result of some fine running by Chris Howson - his shot, according to many, was destined for the backboard only to be deflected onto the post by Will Day who seemed to have lost his bearings as to the location of the goal.

The Stones were left to rue their inability to convert from their short corners, particularly as this proved the difference. Trumping BAHC's five short corners with eight themselves suggests that through the full seventy they were the better side. Alas, they exited Dartford having failed to score a single goal, a first for the league season.

Having played six games away from home in the league since the start of the season and just three at home, the Stones will turn their attention to the visiting Holcombe 3's. The visitors will have the tough task of taking points from a Maidstone side who have lost just once in competitive hockey in all of 2024, this being to title winners OW's on the concluding fixture of the 23/24 season.
