The Ladies 2s faced a tough game this weekend in the rain against Ashford who are just above them in the league. Maidstone had a strong start and found themselves with a few chances to score but unfortunately couldn’t convert. After a quick counter-attack Ashford managed to get their first goal past keeper, Tabitha (U18).
Although Maidstone continued to play well it wasn’t quite enough to keep Ashford at bay and they managed to score a second. With some strong attacking play by Kathryn Goodwin, Becky Ward and Hannah (U18), Maidstone managed to win a short corner which was taken by Captain, Maddie Jarvis, but unfortunately resulted in a near miss after Ella Collie failed to get the tap in on the post.
By half time Maidstone were 3-0 down and felt deflated, fortunately the second half bought a new wave of motivation and Maidstone came back fighting. Rebecca Jarvis, Phoebe (U18) and Hazel (U18) worked hard to defend with opportunities to drive the ball to Gabs (U18) and Georgia South up front. Millie Jones and Hannah (U18) had some great opportunities after picking the ball up in midfield and Maidstone had some promising attacks and shots on goal. Unfortunately, Captain, Maddie Jarvis, was on the wrong end of a nasty flying ball and sustained an injury which saw her out for the remainder of the game. Thankfully, Carly Brinn was quick to step in and cover, doing an outstanding job keeping Ashford at bay.
Wanting to do their Captain proud Maidstone worked hard and managed to win some more short corners with one resulting in a goal after a left slip to Ella Collie (and a deflection off the Ashford defence!). Although Ashford failed to score in the second half, Maidstone couldn’t quite do enough to bring back a win but they are feeling ready and motivated for next week against New Beccehemian 1s.
