Maidstone were looking for their first win of the season away to Upminster after securing only one point between the opening two matches of the season. Maidstone started the match strong with good attacking play leading to a couple of early chances but all were saved by the opposing keeper.The first half continued to be a tough battle between the sides and Maidstone had some more chances from open play but it was Upminster who took the lead with a square pass across goal to beat goalkeeper Becky Ward.
Maidstone went into the second half 1-0 down and some excellent defensive play from captain and Player of the Match Hannah Durston kept Maidstone in the game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the equaliser before Upminster doubled their lead midway through the second half. Maidstone had promising chances from forwards Emily Bush and Laura Jurgeleit, as well as a short corner strike by Catherine Broadbent being cleared off the line by Upminster's defence. Maidstone had the chance to get one back with an attacking short corner as the last play of the game but another strong strike from Catherine Broadbent was saved by the keeper, rebounding to Katie Swaffer who’s attempt was also saved and the home side managed to clear and retain their clean sheet. The match finished 2-0 with Maidstone disappointed with the result but feeling hopeful for things going forward. They take on Norwich City at home next week.
