Club Players Awarded

More than a hundred members of Maidstone Hockey Club enjoyed a black tie Hog Roast dinner at the club in Armstrong Road, Maidstone, on Saturday night, prior to the presentation of the awards for the top players of the past season.

Chairman of the club, Matt Evans, in his speech, reminded members that the club needs to replace the Astroturf at their pitch in the next 2 seasons, which will cost £150,000. Mr Evans said:  ‘This is a substantial amount of money that needs to be found.  When the clubhouse was built some of the finance came from a members loan scheme – club members could set up a direct debit to assist the club.  Any amount above their existing standing order can be put in.  I encourage everyone to look at this scheme as a means to help the club finance larger items.’

In the past season, the club made changes to Catering to make it more cost effective for which Mr Evans thanked Graham Collie who gave his time and advice for free, and to Vianne Gibbons and Imogen Thompson who implemented the changes.

He urged all members to give feedback about this by using the club’s social media pages on Facebook, and on Twitter.

Before the close of the formal part of the evening closed for the disco, Mr Evans thanked a number of volunteers who contribute to the successful running of the club.

  • Mike Evans, club secretary
  • Mick Emery, Hockey manager, juniors
  • Chris Brinn, Hockey manager, men
  • Wendy Emery, Hockey manager, ladies
  • Mark Gibbons, Pitch and Clubhouse Maintenance
  • Roger Daniels, Finance manager
  • Jimmy Christmas, Hockey manager, coaching.

Mr Evans praised Wendy Emery who is standing down from her role, saying: ‘Work commitments have forced her to stop but she put in huge amount of time and work pre season trying to ensure consistency across the Ladies section.  The club is now looking for someone to fill this vacant position.’

Other key volunteers were Mike Chapman, Stephen Rawlings, Helen Brown (who organized the event) coaches Jim House, Greg Laurenson, Wendy Carter and Jeremy Swaffer. The club would be unable to function also without the Fixtures Secretaries, Adie Lake and Louise Cassey, and the captains of each team who spend each week making sure their teams get out to their matches.

Throughout the year, Maidstone Hockey Club has raised funds for Charity, namely, the Lymphoma Association - £500 from a quiz earlier in year and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research -  £200 from the raffle at the awards event, Mick & Wendy Emery’s sponsored bike ride from London to Paris, and the Charity 7’s event which takes place in July.
