Hard Fought Match
Maidstone men's 1s suffered their third 2-1 defeat in a row as they succumbed to local rivals Ashford in a hard fought match at Armstrong Road. Ashford pressed hard right from the start and for the first 15 minutes had Maidstone pegged back well into their own half. And it wasn't until Ashford went one goal up - a poor umpiring decision giving them the chance to execute a brilliant short corner routine - that Maidstone started to play to their game plan. The goal served to kick start Maidstone who for the rest of the half at least matched the away side, manufacturing several good scoring opportunities. Both Greg Laurenson and Iain Brine only denied by very good saves from the Ashford goalkeeper.
Maidstone got even better in the second half and gave little away whilst heaping the pressure on the east kent side. They finally drew level after a fine shot was initially denied by the crossbar only for Greg Laurenson to score the rebound with a well taken volley. Maidstone were unlucky not to go into the lead when the pass from a powerful run from Joe Martin was almost turned in but the plucky Ashford defence managed to just do enough. With 20 minutes left Ashford scored their second after intercepting a pass in the Maidstone half. The resulting move was very polished and Darren Marchant in the Maidstone goal could do nothing to prevent the finish. The home side responded again and increased the pressure and their short corner count but still couldn't score, the final corner clattering back off the crossbar and another attempt being stopped on the line leaving Maidstone with four losses in a row.
