Struggle With Fast Pace
Maidstone men's 1s lost their third game in a row as they went down to a determined High Wycombe side. On a fast pitch Maidstone couldn't quite match the pace with which Wycombe moved the ball and were often on the back foot as the home side attacked. However the Maidstone defence was resolute and managed the attacking threat well despite the possession that Wycombe enjoyed. In contrast Maidstone struggled to hold the ball and were often frustrated by their own mistakes as Wycombe continued to press hard. It was the away side though that went into the half time break a goal up as Joe Martin drove into the Wycombe 'D' along the baseline and clinically finished after the keeper committed himself.
The second half followed a similar pattern as Wycombe pressed harder and harder and continued to knock the ball around at high speeds. In spite of Maidstone's high tempo work rate they still could not match Wycombe who started to be more creative moving forwards. Despite several chances and three short corners Maidstone were unable to increase their tally whereas Wycombe were more clinical. They were unlucky not to equalise from a short corner when the ball hit a Maidstone foot on the line and were then denied the goal from the penalty spot after keeper Darren Marchant made a fantastic save. But with only a few minutes left on the clock Wycombe did equalise after a cross from their right was cleared by Marchant only for a Wycombe player to slot home the rebound. And with two minutes left Wycombe found a winner as they fired a superb drag flick into the bottom right corner of the Maidstone goal from another short corner
