Perfect Season Comes to an End
Maidstone made the long trip to Banbury looking to extend their unbeaten start to the league season.
The journey to Banbury had clearly taken its’ toll on the Maidstone side as they struggled to find the same energy that they had displayed in previous weeks encounters. The first half was a scrappy affair, with limited chances for either side. Greg Laurenson came close to scoring after Brendan Baker slid the ball neatly into the Banbury ‘D’. Maidstone did take the lead going into the half time break from a neatly taken penalty corner from Iain Brine.
Although Maidstone held the lead at the half-time break, this was by no means a comfortable lead, and Banbury continued to attack the Maidstone ‘D’. Maidstone extended their lead early in the second half as Phil Morrison played a trademark ball into the Banbury ‘D’ which was deflected in by one of the home sides defenders. From this point Maidstone struggled to maintain their shape which had been so strong in the previous weeks. Banbury pulled a goal back through a neatly taken penalty corner. Although Maidstone did not stop working they were unable to find a decisive third goal, which allowed Banbury to draw level through a well taken reverse stick strike. With the momentum now with Banbury they again pushed forward, and again they found a forward who expertly converted another reverse stick strike. Maidstone were unable to convert late chances to grab a draw, and so suffered their first defeat of the season.
By virtue of other results in the league; Maidstone still maintain a slender lead at the top of the league, but will need to raise their game again next week as they host what will be a tough side in Woking.
