Maidstone Mens 1s
Old Bordenians Kent Cup
|Date||Sunday 7th October|
Maidstone lost in the opening round of the Kent Cup away at Old Bordenians. A poor performance at odds with their league form means there will be no repeat of last year’s run to the final.
Maidstone started off a little sluggish but were on top for much of the first half and in command of the game. The home side’s attempts to frustrate and constrict the Maidstone attack were very effective but the away side were still able to break them down and take the lead after Steve Marks slotted home for his second of the weekend after just 7 minutes. Maidstone failed to manufacture any further clear chances but were content to hold the ball and frustrate the home side. However as half time approached Old Bordenians drew level after a scrappy goal and then 3 mins before half time went into the lead from a short corner drag flick.
Maidstone started the second half brightly and created enough chances to retake the lead but they just weren’t firing and even their short corners yielded no goals. Despite not actually threatening the Maidstone goal the home side actually extended their lead to 3-1 after a hopeful cross somehow found a way through between goalkeeper and centre back leaving an unmarked forward to tap home from the far post. Maidstone continued to attack but without success and 7 mins from time were left with just 9 on the pitch after 2 yellow cards in quick succession. Despite a sin bin for the home side too Old Bordenians were content to hold the ball for the remaining time to claim the victory.
