Promising Team Performance
Despite a disappointing 5 – 2 loss Maidstone 2s took some heart from a promising team performance with several junior members of the squad making their league debut. Gore Court struck early in the first half through a well worked short corner routine, after soaking up a further five minutes of consistent pressure from Gore Court Maidstone then equalised on the break through good combination play between Tom Starling and Richard Chilcott resulting in Chilcott’s strike beating the keeper. The equalising goal spurred Maidstone on to fight harder putting Gore Court under some pressure, Gore Court however managed to turn the ball over against the run of play in the last few minutes of the half and scored through a well-orchestrated counter attack.
The second half saw Maidstone concede a further two goals in open play and one from a well-executed but controversial penalty flick. Maidstone did at times play some very good hockey during the second half despite only being able to field eleven players with no substitutes on the bench. Maidstone’s Rob Clarkson (Maidstone man of the match) struck back in the last five minutes with a consolation goal from a Chilcott cross. Overall Maidstone definitely suffered from the lack of substitutes on the bench during the second half as fitness told Gore Court were able to press home their advantage to win the game 5 – 2.
