Maidstone 1st XI got their Southern Premier division 2 campaign off to a great start with a 5-3 win over local rivals Gore Court.
Playing the first league match with only 13 players was always going to be a tough ask but Maidstone rose to the challenge well. Maidstone came out with a clear game plan and executed it well in the first half - soaking up a lot of pressure whilst hitting Gore Court on the counter. Maidstone gave almost nothing away and after both sides exchanged a single short corner where both hit the post it was the away side that broke the deadlock when Tim Price finished off a composed counter attack. Maidstone almost completed a faultless half but just before the break they momentarily lost concentration and allowed Gore Court to throw an aerial ball straight into their D to an unmarked forward. Though this was intercepted by the Maidstone defender this was deemed to have been a foul and the home side put away the resulting short corner.
Maidstone started the second half in disarray showing no signs of the game plan from the first half. Gore Court took full advantage and a break down the Maidstone left resulted in a goal from a narrow angle which was swiftly followed up by tap in goal as the home side started to attack in numbers. However Maidstone didn't let their heads drop but instead they increased their work rate and gradually played themselves back into the match. Tireless front running from man of the match Joe Martin created space for Maidstone to play in behind the Gore Court Defence and they were soon back on level terms after Greg Laurenson finished off a nice move and Iain Brine converted from the penalty spot after his short corner drag flick hit a defender on the line. Maidstone continued to work hard and started to look by far the more threatening. They went back into the lead after some patient build up allowed Phil Morrison to fire the ball into the D looking for the Maidstone deflection. Instead it found a Gore Court stick before going in resulting in a Maidstone goal under the new rules. To finish the game off Maidstone again built the play down their left after another lead from Martin. Price found Laurenson unmarked in the D and he easily slotted the ball past the helpless keeper to give Maidstone the perfect start.
