Hard Fought Victory
Maidstone ladies 2s kept up their impressive 100% record with a hard fought victory over Cliftonville 1s who themselves had only lost a single match. Cliftonville started the match the better side and straight away attacked deep into the Maidstone half. The Maidstone defence were able to repel the attack but struggled to get the ball out and found themselves under pressure for a sustained period. Through working hard Maidstone eventually saw out this pressure and were able to attack themselves. The game continued in an end to end fashion for most of the half. Cliftonville took the lead when an unmarked player in the 'D' managed to finish from a tight angle. Maidstone responded quickly through the outstanding Sue Leaning who fired in from the top of the Cliftonville 'D'. However the away side again pulled into the lead as another weak shot managed to find its way into Maidstone goal. Again it was Leaning who brought Maidstone back to level terms with another solo effort - this time from close range after she weaved through the Cliftonville defence. And it was Maidstone who finished the half the better side and could have gone into the break in the lead but the away keeper made good saves from Jenny Duggan and Helen Brown.
Maidstone started the second half as they finished the first and it didn't take long for them to take the lead, player of the match Leaning completing her hat trick. Though Maidstone's usually effective short corners weren't firing they eventually put one away as the impressive Brogan Cummins smashed home a rebound. However Cliftonville hit back again to make it 4-3, leaving a nervous final few minutes but Maidstone were able to see the game out and claim their ninth win of the season.
