Last Minute Equaliser sees Kent Sides Share Points
Maidstone played host to fellow Kent side, Canterbury 2s, this week who were sitting just 1 point above them in the table going into the game. Keen to pick up 3 points both sides started strongly and set the tone for what was to be a thrilling encounter.
The game was an open affair from the start with both sides creating chances with some nice attacking play. The first decent chance fell to the visitors who, when faced with an open goal, shot well wide of the target. Following from this, Canterbury had the slight upper hand and forced two or three fine saves from keeper Jenny Vincent (sponsored by Harlequin). Although Maidstone were creating some chances themselves, it was first blood to Canterbury when a ball into the D was deflected past the keeper: 0 – 1 and this is how the first half ended.
Maidstone came out fighting after the break and played some fantastic hockey. The young Canterbury side weren’t willing to give away their lead easily, however, and the scoreline remained unchanged for some time. Eventually, a quick free hit taken by Rachel Thompson (sponsored by Whitehead Monckton) to Lizzie McClintock (sponsored by Flaming Porkys) at the top of the ‘D’ then found Hannah Durston (sponsored by Whitehead Monckton) who finished the move by putting the ball past the quickly approaching keeper into the far bottom corner: 1 – 1 and game on.
Both sides pushed for the win and it was the visitors who engineered the advantage when a defensive lapse in concentration allowed the ball to fall to a Canterbury player in acres of space in the D. She finished the chance perfectly by accurately placing the ball neatly into the corner, beating Vincent: 1 – 2.
Maidstone knew they were still more than in the game and pushed hard for the equaliser. Chances came and went, however, and time was quickly running out. With just moments to go, Laura Thompson (sponsored by Ezy Clean) won a penalty corner. The corner was to be the last play of the game and it was Thompson (L) who pounced on a loose ball to smash it into the bottom corner and seal a point for the home side: 2 – 2. A well deserved point for both teams given the open and competitive nature of the game.
