Local Rivals Take the Points
Maidstone entertained local rivals Holcombe this week having not met each other in the league since the 2010/2011 season. It was immediately clear that the visitors had significantly strengthened their squad since their last meeting.
Keen to put an end to the run of recent losses Maidstone started hard, however it was Holcombe who struck first after dominating the play when a shot goal-wards was deflected by a lingering attacker 13 minutes into the game. They continued to enjoy the majority of the pressure and a brave Rachel Thompson (sponsored by Whitehead Monckton) putting her body on the line to save a short corner strike led to an expertly taken penalty stroke just 3 minutes later to double the lead.
Despite the early double-shock, the home side grew into the game and improved as the first half went on. Going into the half time team talk the girls were confident of recovering the two goal deficit. Unfortunately, however, a break following a Maidstone penalty corner led to a two on one with keeper Jenny Vincent (sponsored by Harlequin) who was unable to keep out a third goal despite some excellent saves earlier in the game with a fourth coming just a few minutes later following some excellent skill.
Never giving up in true Maidstone spirit, the home side continued to fight and work hard. The defensive set up stood strong with plenty of bravery and reflex saves, however were unable to take advantage of periods of possession and domination to reduce the deficit. The final score ended 0 – 4 and Maidstone look forward to taking on not-so-local side Lincoln (away) next weekend with a view to getting back into winning ways.
