Three Points at Home
Maidstone were keen to impress the visitors in their first home league game of the season and they started strongly, quickly and accurately and dominated in all areas of the pitch from the start, creating chances almost immediately from the whistle.
A lapse in concentration at the back, however, saw the visitors score against the run of play mid way into the first half. At 0 – 1 down the girls fought hard together to get the equaliser: a moment of exceptional skill from Lizzie McClintock (sponsored by Flaming Porkys) opened up the defence and she was able to slip the ball past the stranded keeper to Gemma Newman (sponsored by Whitehead Monckton) who was waiting at the far post: 1 – 1.
The home side continued to dominate following the equaliser and plenty of chances were created. Going into the break the side were certain their domination would soon be converted and they continued the second half firmly in control. Patience paid off and eventually the deadlock was broken from a good piece of team play between Catherine Green (sponsored by Robins and Day) and Hannah Durston (sponsored by Whitehead Monckton) when Catherine was fouled cynically upon pulling the trigger. McClintock coolly converted from the spot: 2 – 1.
Confidence was high and the home side’s third goal came shortly after the second: Green, McClintock and Durston again linking well from a set piece routine, ending in Durston clinically finding the backboard to make it 3 – 1.
The final ten minutes of the game saw the visitors fight back and Maidstone’s defence were forced to work hard. A second goal was scored by Saffron Walden making for a nervy last few minutes. The home side worked hard, however, determined not to throw away the lead. Final score 3 – 2.
