All To Do
Maidstone entertained Sevenoaks in an evening game at nearby Holcombe Hockey Club for their second match of the weekend against a top-3 team this Sunday. Sevenoaks came into the game full of confidence having won all 5 of their post-Christmas fixtures and clearly fighting for the top spot.
The visitors’ confidence was clear from the start, but Maidstone applied themselves as if it were a cup game and made Sevenoaks work hard for possession. Unfortunately it took just 10 minutes for the ‘home’ defence to be unlocked when ex-international Cathy Gilliat-Smith was given enough space at the top to squeeze an accurate shot into the bottom corner. Maidstone’s forthcoming lack of concentration from the pushback was then immediately punished when the same striker again worked herself a good position in the D and skilfully put it under keeper Jenny Vincent (sponsored by Ezy-Clean).
Maidstone then steadied the ship for the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, creating a couple of half-chances themselves, but nothing clear enough to be pounced upon. The ‘home’ side put together some good passages of play, although the skill and pace of the key Sevenoaks players proved too much and Maidstone conceded again early in the second half.
Following the third goal, Maidstone continued to give it their all and keep the scoreline at 3-0 for the majority of the remainder of the game until Vincent suffered an injury with 4 minutes to go and Sevenoaks then managed to capitalise twice more.
Again Maidstone felt the final scoreline was an unfair reflection on the game.
