Game pod Two Halves
After the disappointment of last weekend, Maidstone went into this game with the confidence of gaining at least one point. The team started positively and had the run of play for much of the first half, which ended 0-0 despite both teams creating chances.
The second half saw a completely different game. Maidstone struggled to get out of the blocks and raise the tempo to that which they like to play at. Against the run of play Chelmsford managed to score a counter-attacking goal 6 minutes into the second half.
The goal saw heads drop and despite trying to get back on level terms, a second goal was scored by the same player just 7 minutes later, who tapped in after the home side’s defence failed to clear their lines after keeper Jenny Vincent (sponsored byEzy-Clean) making 3 reaction saves in a row.
The two quick goals did not deter the home side from trying to pick up some much-needed points, however a short corner was given away just before the hour mark, which was struck hard to breach the defence.
At 3-0 down Maidstone continued to show fighting spirit and in a typical attack, player of the match Jody Goodwin (sponsored byIntelligent Linking) won a penalty stroke by being the victim of a series of offences which ultimately denied her a good goal-scoring opportunity. Rachel Thompson (sponsored by RSC) coolly converted to bring the score to 3-1.
Pushing high in order to close the gap further, Maidstone’s defence were again caught short and a one on one situation was converted just 2 minutes after the stroke. Unfortunately Maidstone were unable to get back into the game after this and the final score remained 4-1.
