Maidstone Ladies 1s
|Date||Sunday 19th February|
Keen to make amends for yesterday’s last-gasp defeat, Maidstone made another lengthy journey, this time to Diss in Norfolk, to play the team just one place ahead of them in the league.
Noting that Harleston’s most prolific goal-scorer was back on the team-sheet this week refused to deter the travelling team who were keen to move back up to 7th place in the table.
Said goal-scorer, however, slotted home from range at her first opportunity after just 3 minutes. With tired legs from the previous game and hours spent travelling, Maidstone struggled to get into the game and assert any authority. Although the play levelled out and Maidstone had their chances, it was Harleston who were next to score and squeezed a further goal through the defensive lines to make it 2-0 after 30 minutes. Just before half time a penalty corner was conceded which was expertly converted and the visitors went into the break 3-0 down but not out of the match.
Bouyed by their 3 goals, it was Harleston who came out of the second half blocks the strongest and scored two open play goals within 3 minutes of the restart. The remaining 25 minutes of the game belonged to Maidstone and despite the willing, the fight, the determination and the chances, just one goal was scored (by Serena Manners) to bring it back to 5-1. A scoreline not reflecting the statistics of the game, but one which sent Maidstone into the playoff place for the first time this season.
Player of the match went to Laura Thompson (sponsored byPinden Limited).
