Maidstone Girls Under 14s

The U14 girls team started their league campaign with a home game against Canterbury C. Maidstone started well and had most of the play in the first 10 minutes of the game; Alicia Grassom and Ellie James making some great runs upfront. A defensive lapse led to Canterbury taking the lead with a sharp counter attack and well taken goal, which goalkeeper Sarah Ward could do nothing about. Maidstone kept working hard, despite a number of positional changes and their pressure resulted in an equalising own goal which went in off the Canterbury keeper. The young Canterbury team picked up their game after this equaliser and defenders Rebecca Grove, Ella Collie and Alex Penry had to work hard to keep the score-line level at half time. After the break, Maidstone played the better hockey, making much better use of the space on the pitch. Isabella Ramiro, Rebekah Watson and Annys Fearon linked well in midfield, providing an excellent ball from which Emily Beacon scored to put Maidstone ahead. Maidstone went further ahead when Ramiro fed another accurate ball to Lizzy Thomas allowing Gracie-Mei to score with an unstoppable finish. After the goal was scored, Maidstone continued to defend well with Vicki Barnden putting in a lot of hard work in midfield. This was an excellent performance from Maidstone and a special mention should go to Amanda Norman, Abbie Leyton and Elizabeth Oldesanya who coped very well in their first competitive game for the club.
